It's disheartening to see the level of craftsmanship on the forum and then look at my pitiful scratchings.  I can say, however, that my work is primitive style....like 800 BC primitive.

Question:

Have we gotten so good at doing this hobby with the modern ways we have of working that we have outdone the oldtimers?  Is our work become 'too good'?

I look at the level of Scrimshaw and general workmanship, and I am amazed all the time.

I asked this question at the Lake Cumberland CLA Mini show, and didn't get much feeling either way.

Any opinions here?

I believe that we have surpassed the craftsmanship of the originals , just look at the firearms being produced today let alone the accoutrements!
