Web for foreward lock bolt.
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:35:37 AM »
I recently ordered a B. weight Coerain  ,  .50  +  38  to be inlet into a Reedy stock  with the RR hole drilled. I am trying to picture in my head how thick will the web be for the foreward lock bolt.  In my mind  I'm wondering if it will be thick enough.    ????.

You have to tell the man inletting the barrel how thick you want the web to be.

Greybeard, you can drop the frontlock screw as the Norwegian gunsmith Knud Jacobsen Gjerstad did on this smootbore ca1835 ;)

Drill a small hole in the barrel channel over the rr hole and measure the depth to the bottom of the rr hole and transfer that to the outside of you stock. I do this on all my guns to make sure there is enough meat.

Now that is cool -- I've read about doing that, but never seen a picture, thanks.

I would specify the depth wanted if that's possible, and then check it with a hole drilled in the barrel channel when you get the stock, as Pathfinder suggests.  I'm almost hoping to have a problem like this after seeing Runar's picture -- and no doubt I will :).

A great majority of originals that I have worked on have NO web at the front lock screw, as a matter of fact many have a notch filed in the bottom of the barrel to accommodate part of the screw.

Runstave . Thanks. That is an option for sure. A lot of English percussion doubled had that treatment. Thanks to all the responders. I did what I should have done in the first place and emailed David and recieved a quick response.  He tries for 3/16 ths. so all my worrying was for naught. Thanks folks     Bob
