where to buy?? match grade swamped pistol barrels
« on: February 23, 2011, 03:21:31 AM »
This has probably been asked before, but....

Who makes a good quality swamped pistol barrel?  Would like to build a target pistol (for fun), and need a good barrel to start with!!

Ed Rayle makes very nice swamped pistol barrels. Stonewall Creek Outfitters carries some in stock.

Dane:  Does this interest you?  I have two .40 cal. pistol barrels oct. to round - one is swamped in the round section,  the other is tapered.  The first one is a sleeved damascus - both have my "H. Toenjes" rifling them.     Hugh Toenjes

Blacksmoke,

WOW that is EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ACCURACY!! That would be fine accuracy out of a rifle at 50 yds!! I would love to see pictures of these pistols!

Congrats!

Hugh that is some fine shooting. Speaks well for the quality of your work.

I have built a couple of pistols on Ed's barrels and they shot very well. One of them set a nationl record at Friendship in the traditional flint agg.

I have two to build now and the barrels were provided with the stocks by the owner but I have not taken time to see who the barrels are by but I think they are Green Mtn. They are 50 cals and will be brusers to shoot competition with.

Thanks guys:   The targets that I posted are "proof" targets shot to prove "accuracy" and not the "strength" of my hand rifled barrels before I ship them to a client.   The proofing apparatus is a shooting bench that I made so one can mount a barrel in a cradle that is removable for reloading and replace it in the exact same position for the next shot.   The bench is firmly embedded in the ground which can only be done when the ground is not frozen or covered with snow.  This exercise eliminates the shooter's skill for shooting and focuses on the skill of the barrel maker instead.  ;)      Hugh Toenjes

Hugh.........you're not playing a fair game here.     If you would show us some targets shot with "other make" barrels, using the same apparatus it would have more credence.    I had a rifle with a 28" barrel in 45 cal., with a 4 power
weaver scope that would shoot targets like you have shown, even better.   But, it isn't fair to compare these with a normal open sighted, hand held rifle, or pistol............Don

With all due respect, I don't understand this comment.  He is simply showing the precision his barrel is capable of--everyone knows that the final accuracy is dependent on alot of things--and he is not, unless I missed it, comparing it with any others.  It is a simple example of his work.

And I now own that .536 caliber barrel and when I get the pistol completed we will see if I can do the barrel justice on the range!! :o :o    ;D ;D

Don:   Mike is correct - I am not doing an independent "product review" here.   If and when I do - I would publish the findings as found using the " proofing" bench in each test for each make of barrel being tested.   However I have "proofed" a number of other barrels besides my own over the years and I cannot release the findings as they were not done with an independent and un-bias assistant.   Also I did not keep the targets.  However I can say that the barrels that were tested did not perform as well as was expected.   Doing accuracy proofing takes a lot of time - one full day for one barrel!   When the weather cooperates I would be happy to proof other maker's barrels if someone wants to send them to me and pay for my time and powder.     Also I would need an independent assistant to help and record the findings.   Hugh Toenjes

Hugh, do you have any pictures of the sleeved damascus barrel? I'd love to see it.

Best regards

A local builder has made a number of competition pistols with Rayl barrels and they are highly respected and sought after.  "Ats all I know!

Rolf:    The sleeved damascus barrel is "on the bench" now-  I am doing the final profiling and threading.  I will also do a preliminary etching to bring out the damascus pattern.  When all of that is finished it will be photographed and posted for sale on the ALR "for sale" page - hopfully next week.  Hugh Toenjes

Was chatting with Mr. Rice today and asked him about pistol barrels. Though he does not catalog them he recommended that I check with Jim Chambers as he has some 9 inch oct-taper round .54s he is working up a kit for.

I have or have had several pistol barrels that were made by John or Don Getz, swamped, oct/round and straight tapered.  Iv'e used Rayl and Green Mtn.  also.  Bottom line is, any of the modern production pistol barrels will shoot better then 99.9% of us can hold once you get a load worked up.
