TVM Grand Rifles

There are a few TVM Grand rifles for sale at online auctions, hovering between $1900 and $2200, and not selling. Besides the obvious carving and embellishments, are they worth that kind of money? Just curious as to their position in the market in contemporary rifles.

Worth is highly subjective to the buyer, so I can't comment on that.  I think they are probably well built guns.  However,  they are up in the price range where you can find really nice used,  fully custom rifles by well known makers, that will also probably increase more in value over time, if you keep your eyes open. There are, or have been recently some great guns on this site, and the CLA and TOW, that are in, or less than that same ballpark - nice pieces by Mike Brooks, Ken Netting, Charlie Wallingford and others - which I would chose first.

Thats along the lines of what I thought, and I am always looking for nice guns of any type. This ML bug has bit hard in the last year. I have aquired some really nice guns, antique and contemporary. I had a long discussion recently with one of the best artisans in the country. We are realistically talking two years wait for him to make my dream gun. I keep searching for it for sale, exactly what I want, just sitting there waiting for me to write a check. I have concluded its not going to happen that way. What I have found in visiting a few of these craftsmen is that they are all extremely back-logged.  Are there any other sites besides CLA and TOW that have inventory of fine contemporary guns for sale?

One of your best bets would be Dave Ripplinger at Track of The Wolf in Minnesota. He used to have a very nice selection of handmade rifles made by Midwestern gunmakers like Jerry Kirklin. Check also the Kindig's at Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, Ohio, and Dixie Gun Works. Dixie used to have a separate booklet size catalog of fine contemporary long guns for sale. Haven't seen one in a few years.

Its been ten years since I shot at Friendship at the NMLRA Nationals, but you could see collectively about a hundred longrifles and smoothbores in the sheepsheds and lambsheds of Commercial Row, plus the real "purty" ones at Gunmakers Hall.

Personally I think TVM makes a excellent rifle. Not super fancy ( unless you want them to for extra cost ), but excellent for shooting / hunting. I own two of thier flintlock rifles and am getting a third one made. I own a 32 caliber southern rifle, and a 50 caliber early virginia rifle. I'm having a late lancaster grand rifle made for me in 50 caliber. You'll never meet nicer people than Toni and Matt. And for the quality of rifle you can't beat the price.

Yeah - Guy's response was very well put. The TVM might be worth that price - I don't know, never seen one, but I've seen and trust the work of Mike and the rest.

Mike Brooks just posted a super early style rifle for sale in that price range.  Looks like something right off the pages of the Shumway book.  Someone needs to buy it......it is decorated appropriately for an early style longrifle and while not his most highly decorated gun, the attention to detail on it really sets it off.  Seems like a really good gun for the money to me.

Again, this is nothing negative about TVM's Grand Rifles - I know they make a solid basic rifle for a very reasonable price - just want folks to be aware that there are a lot of nice guns by good custom builders - many of whom post on here and help all of us out a lot from time to time - that turn up for sale at very reasonable prices.

TVM"s Grand rifles prices have risen from $2000.00 to $3000.00 dollars.

With the price increase it puts them in the same ball park as other custom makers.

Hi Loco,
In my opinion, which is based solely on photos, a TVM grand rifle in the $1200-$1500 price range might be a pretty good buy.  However, for much more than that they simply don't have the attention to detail that you should expect.  The lock and side panels are too thick and clumsy, the carving is adequate but not exciting, and the overall feeling is large and a bit clumsy.  I am sure they are made well but the things I point out are not really what I consider to be "extra" features.  Again in my opinion, they are basic to a well designed and executed gun.

From the TVM web-site it looks like thier prices increased about $75.00 to $150.00 on thier other rifles. And the TVM grand rifle went from $2000.00 to $3000.00 dollars. I believe TVM makes a excellent solid accurate rifle. If I didn't believe that I wouldn't of bought three rifles from them. I'm more a hunter than a collector so fancy rifles don't impress me awhole lot. Hitting what I shoot at and a rifle that can take some hunting abuse are more in line with my interest.  :)  I just hope they didn't over price themselves. Matt and Toni are very nice people and I have nothing but praise for them. I wish more bussiness's conducted themselves like TVM does.

With the current price of a TVM Grand, one for only $2200 is a steal.  I have 4 of their rifles and they are super.  And they absolutely stand behind their products with the best customer service in the business.

 :(I've wanted a TVM Grand rifle for quite sometime. Their  recent price increase has put the rifles out of my reach and also has affected many other potential buyers I'm sure! I'm on SS and my increases  (none the past two years) have not been 30%. Slowly we old folks are being priced out of just about everything. Will it ever end????? :(

You have to remember that there is a good bit of difference between a "custom" rifle and a "semi" custom. TVMs are nice rifles, I have one, but they are still only "semi" custom. You might also try looking at the nmlra.org site.

What makes a TVM rifle a semi custom instead of a custom? I was told they make their guns from blanks, not precarves.
