Old Little Horn

This is a little old horn that I got up in Maine in an antique shop, North of Ellsworth on US 1. You can hold it up to the light and see the powder in it. It is 7 1/2" around the long side, the but is 1 5/8-1 3/8". Has octagon carved on spout end with notches cut in them. It looks like a pine but plug. A pretty little plain horn that I have added to my collection. I thought that some of you might enjoy seeing it.

That is my kind of powder horn! I have looked through every nook and crannie of umteen dozen antique shops to find just one little gem like this. RTD, did it by any chance have black powder in it when you found it. On a couple of rare occassions I have found them with old BP in them. Most antique shop owners don't have a clue. I couldn't tell how old the powder was but it was fun to test fire the stuff and pretend I was using up the leftover reserves from the Alamo. :o I'll always be a kid till they plant me.

It did have powder in it when I got it. I am not sure how old but it did go boom. I am always looking for them. I had another one not quit as old and let it get away from me. Not this one.

That's a very nice example of a common small horn. I think these were used more than a lot of people would like to admit and over a very long time frame.
