well long ears    sorry that it turned out like that...  If he welded it with stainless he either used 309 which is used for carbon to stainless or inconel  which will bond to carbon or many exotics.       I would drill it first before you see if it will brown.    if he used a straight stainless wire it will not bond to the mild steel and will most likely come out when drilled....Phil

easy fix for anyone who can weld. tig or mig. the only problem you might encounter, redrilling, is if the welding left any slag deposit inside the tang. That will dull your bit and might leave a visible pit in the finished tang.

Excuse me, I read this twice, maybe still missed something.  You say you drilled a #21 then clearance for a  8-32 screw.  #21 is the tap size for 10-32, not 8-32.

I've TIG welded many a' tang and never had any color issue.  I would plug your exhisting hole with a correct sized screw, TIG it up, dress it with a file and redrill.

You could cut the tang off and weld a new one on.

Put the darn tang down, and take a long slow breath.  File the tang, and try browning it before you have another tizzy.  If it works proceed, and if it don't, cut the dang thing off, and find a welder that follows direction, and have a piece added with mild rod/wire.  Then get back to your build.  Life's too short for this kind of male bovine manure.

The same guy who welded up my butchered tang welded closed a hole I misdrilled in the lock plate, no problem and it browned just like the rest of the lock plate.

It would take a @!*% good welder not to make it worse. If you heat the metal enough to start laying bead in there it Will shrink and probably warp too. It will not go back in the inlet for sure. Make the screw and hole a larger size if possible. If not I would go the route of inserting a metal plug in it and peening it. There is also a diagram of a new tang being installed on a breechplug in the latest edition of "Recreating The American Longrifle". The tang is cut off and a new tang shaped to match the inlet then silversoldered in place on the original plug.

Welding is not going to cause a problem on a piece this short and especially just filling a hole.
Silver soldering a tang on is not the best idea.  If the breech is installed or removed and pressure is applied to the tang its likely to pop off.

I find that clothes hanger wire works real well to TIG parts together that need to be browned etc.  I have stretched barrels (antique) as well as welded antique tangs.

How did this ever work out?? Call me skeptical but you guys must know better welders than I do.

Paddle I will let you know.  My brother-in-law knows the welder and apparently the guy does free lance work on airplane parts and has been welding for years.  I should get it back this week and will certainly update you.

Almost anyone can weld up a screw hole with no problems. But a welding shop stick welder or a wire welder not using gas is not a good idea.  TIG welders are good for fine work but can made VERY hard welds that cannot be annealed.

This didn't warp and it has a misplaced hole "plugged" with my wire welder.

The tang is welded to the plate as well and I just did another.

This was plugged and redrilled without the slightest problem.

This tang was welded on after the standing part was fit to the hook. Even though quite a bit of welding was done nothing warped though the tang was only rough and was cut to final shape after welding. Did not affect the coloring process either.

Gentlemen,

Got the lock back today.  I am super pleased with the tig welder that fixed it.  Here are some images.  I have not completely polished it.
