Side plate for a flintlock Leman trade rifle
« on: March 08, 2011, 09:08:10 PM »
I'm currently making a flintlock Leman trade rifle to use as a brush gun (and I mean eastern Virginia brush).  I have been unable using the normal sources (Whisker's books, review of a couple of articles on H. Leman, Shumway's books, etc.) to find a picture of a typical sideplate for a flintlock Leman.  Would appreciate any pictures, sketches, or references that anyone would have.  Thanks!

Swampwalker,
There are 3 examples in the ALR library.  http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?board=103.0
Not being even close to a knowledgable person on Lemans I wouldn't know what a typical sideplate would look like.

Since Henry Leman apprenticed to Melchoir Fordney I would look to Fordney rifles for inspiration.

Ya David I thought of the Fordney connection, and that's my fallback position.  Didn't know there were any examples in the library, I'll take a look.  Thanks

I've been trying to keep up with all that is there.  The library is getting huge!  What a great free online resource.
Good luck to you on the project and thanks to the library folks for continuing to build on the number of guns they are documenting.
Cheers,
Ken

It depends on the Leman. The standard circle with a nubb underneath would be fine.

Like Bill says, it depends on the Leman. The washer with the nub comes into play on later guns of the 1850s and 60s. The most common early flint side plate is the skinny military  plate seen on this rifle:

This one is good for mid 1830s through the 1840s.

Thanks for the replies!  I also contacted J. Brooks, who also said that the round washer style with the nib is appropriate, with a second one used for the front bolt.  Sean, I'm not sure what to make of the attributed Leman rifle in the library - it definitely does not look like Lemans typical trade rifle.  The side plate looks like Derringer's typical trade rifle side plate.

Leman was probably buying parts from the same place Derringer was.
