Dumb but serious question

OK! Some one please tell me how you keep the wood clean while your carving on the stock?

Dave,

Unless you're talking about a bunch of inletting black or something like that, I don't think it really matters.  The wood will get a little "dirty" just by handling it, but a quick hit with fine sand paper or scotch brite pad just prior to staining should take care of that. 

After the rifle is "in the white", and you're starting to carve, use a clean rag when holding the stock.  This will cut down on the oils from your hands being transferred to the stock.  To be honest, the only time I've had an issue with something like that is during the summer, when you're trying not to sweat all over the thing...

I try to keep my hands clean at that point, always use a clean cloth in the vise jaws.  The stock needs a final scraping anyway.

I wipe down my stocks with Lacquer thinner.  This seems to work well to clean  as well as degrease them.

If you're working with walnut, it's impossible.

The wood turns your hands black, then your hands turn the wood black.  Damndest thing I've ever seen...
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."
