Metal Stamping Tools

Hey fellers does anyone know where you can buy a set of metal stamping tools so you could stamp your name and number of rifle you are building ? Since im not good at engraving i have been having that done its kinda costly and i can see why i thought at one time brownells carried metal stamping tools i have there new catalog but didnt see any in it if anyone here knows of a source i would really appericate it. Another quick question i feel kinda dumb asking this were would a person go to on this site if he wanted to add a picture of a rifle hes building or has built so other members can see it ?  Thank you all and for your time

Harbor Freight carries two sizes. I have used the set I have many times and the work very well for something that costs less than $10.

I ordered my name stamp from Brownell's.  That way the spacing was nice.  It is really hard to individually stamp letters to form a name and get them evenly spaced and straight.

Google SHARS Tools. Good quality stuff (even if most is made in China) and you can pick from several sizes and with a holder to make them look nice and get it done at one shot. About $135.

I have to agree with Rase(again) that a name stamp is the way to go. Individual letter stamps never look evenly spaced nor line up vertically.

Another source is Sparks Steel Stamps. And I think you can go thru Chris Atland to get a stamp made for you.

The bigger the stamp, the harder you need to hit it. You may need several strikes to get a good impression.

Here is an impression made by a stamp they made for me.  This is a large one.  I have others one third this size.

Acer, How did you get that impression so well done? Hammer or a press? Even with multi strikes with a heavy hammer I can not get my 4 character stamp to look that good!

I think there may be some confusion about who is impressing who, Dennis, but I'll bet Davec2 did that with a press, not by hammer.


I have used a combination press and hammer technique to make a favorable impression.

Dennis,

This particular impression was made with a press.  (See this link   http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=1138.0  )  I also do it with a hammer, and have good luck, but use a different technique for different situations.  For example, in jewelry work, I use multiple small taps while carefully rocking the stamp tool so that I don't get superimposed images.  For heavier work on steel, I often use one heavy blow with a heavy hammer if the strike won't damage whatever I am marking.  Two suggestions:  1) use a lead block (at least 5 lbs) as an anvil for most hammer marking and, 2) practice, practice, practice on something similar to what you want to make ( same material, same thickness, same surface contour, etc.) until you are confident your technique will work.
