First Banded NC Horn
« on: March 24, 2011, 10:05:45 PM »
Hello all,
After the HCH meeting up in Altoona, I was inspired to do my first banded NC horn.  It sure was a learning experience--went through 7 pieces of horn to get the smallest ring to come out.  It is about 17 inches long and about 2 3/4 inches across the butt section and 3 inches across the first ring of the plug.  The beehive butt is a dark-aged cherry and has an integral finial.  It took two tries to turn the butt--first one was not larget enough to overahang the band at the base.  The spout is a two-piece antler tip--the tip is shaped into a tapering octagon.  I have been looking for one of these white horns with black growth rings for a while.  I dyed the bands black to match the shoulder of the horn.  A friend says that banded horns are the tools of the devil--now I know he was not far off!  So what do you all think?

Carl it looks very nice indeed, especially the tip!!  Congrats!  As for the color; let it age on its' own.  Thanks for sharing and looks like a keeper.

I like it all--especially that antler tip. Very nice work. You never need to tell folks how many mistakes you made along the way if you wound up in the right spot. ;)

That is a sweet color variation on the horn.  I like that you dyed the bands black to match...Top notch Carl.  I too was inspired and am currently working on one...will post when finished.

An excellent job.  And that's your first banded horn?  Wow.  I'm impressed.  I'm trying to get the nerve up to do one but I doubt it will look that good.
