The basic package
« on: March 27, 2011, 07:16:17 PM »
Put this together recently. It's a basic lock, stock and barrel. Total cost out of pocket was about $150.00, give or take a few bucks.

No buttplate, simple trigger, simple gaurd, two thimbles. Made all the hardware (including the buttplate) with scraps of junk that was being tossed out at work last November.  It's amazing what one can make out of junk.

The stain is a heavy application of aquafortis, scraped then a little brown leather dye in certain spots and honey maple stain over the entire surface. No sandpaper was used, it's all scraped.

I have not shot it, but I plan on doing so at the Log Cabin next week (I get a play day). Thimbles are easy, triggers are easy. The triggergaurd took me three tries before I was satisfied (I need to revamp my approach at that), but I'm gaining.

I have no idea who the barrel maker is as I picked it up at Friendship last June for $75.00. The stock cost me $75.00. I think the barrel may be a Numrich, but that's just a guess. It could be just about anybody's...it had a breechplug in it and it measured out to 5/8" long. The barrel is a 40 and measures 13/16's across the flats. I reset the breechplug to 1/2".

I need to learn how to take better pictures too......

Where did the lock figure in that $150--or did you make that? All told, I'm impressed. I'm partial to pretty plain guns.

The lock was given to me, no cost out of pocket...........wanted to make something that is bare bones, no frills, plain jane shooting piece.

That's a great looking rifle.  The cost of the parts are generally dwarfed by the labor anyhow, but this gun really shows how well a few dollars can be spent.

Very nice looking rifle without a whole lot of money involved. Take pride in it!
I hope it shoots as good as it looks. What caliber is it?

I'll give you $200 for it.  That would basically be a 33% profit for you.   ;D  Just kidding, nice work.

Like it a lot. Even if you bought the lock , the cost would still be modest.

Me too on the butt plate.  Your description says no buttplate but later says you made the butt plate.  I can't tell from the pics.  Would like to see some close ups of the the tg!

Nice looking gun.  I'll up the ante to $300 and pay shipping.  Gives you a clean 100% profit!<g>

Here are some pictures of the buttplate (or lack thereof) and the target I shot today at the Log Cabin.

I'm also including a few pics of the ramrod entry area...I had fun doing this and thought it came out interesting.

John:  Beautiful rifle. I've seen you work and the result you got from a bunch of "scrap" is fantastic and not unexpected. I can't wait to see what you can do when you don't have to use scrap!!!!!!  -  Ron  :)

That's a great rifle, Graeckle! It has nice lines, good craftsmanship and looks original. I'll admit I've never tried scraping a stock but your results speak for themselves.
