Breech plug lube
« on: March 31, 2011, 05:23:22 AM »
Avast ye scurvy dogs,
Could someone give me a recommendation for lubing a breech plug.  I am about to screw it in for the last time on an almost finished gun and I would like to lube the threads to make sure it unscrews again.  I know that some of you have mentioned some options before but I just cannot remember the wisdom.

Thanks,
dave

Choke tube lube is nothing more than anti-sieze compound, sold for about 1/4 the price at auto parts stores.  One small tube is a life time supply,as you need a microdot to cover your plug, for it to do the job.  Buy the smallest tube they have.

STP. Its a lot cheaper than anything firearms related.
Use it for fitting barrels on brass suppository guns as well.
It will not allow metal to bond since it contains a zinc EP compound.
Its what keeps flat tappet engines from eating cams and lifters.
