Whoops
« on: April 02, 2011, 09:44:31 PM »
So I'm new at this building game. Whoops is my middle name. Anyone give me some help in fixing inletting mistakes. Read this filling areas over inletted. My first shot at a stock that didn't have the lock inletted. Made the mortise at the front of the lock too big at the top by maybe 1/16 in or a little more. Thought about sawdust and some superglue, afraid to glue the lock in and or it won't stain. Ant suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Set the lock into the stock, and clean up the edges of the oversized gap.  Now, make a piece that will fit into the void, and glue it in with stainable wood glue.
Or leave the lock ouot, clean up the edges of the inlet, make a piece that fits tightly against the wood, and wedge it tightly there with the glue, and a wedge inside the inlet.  Then re-inlet it to your satisfaction.  It ain't over 'til it's over!
Don't use superglue or CA - it won't stain at all.

I with Taylor on this, and make sure the two pieces of wood fit together before trying to glue it.  You also need to make a wedging system that applys pressure full lenghth.  I cut very thin strips of maple from scrap of the same blank with a table saw, trying to pick the same edge exposure to help with the match.  Use a small sharp scraper on both sides before gluing in the piece.  This gets rid of the saw blade roughness for a better seam.  I choose to leave enough thickness to re-inlet the piece  and the small scraper is usually the solution for that as well.

The glue line should be insignificant if with the grain. I use hide glue or Tightbond.{ yellow glue]
