Look like you're moving along. I go back and read Dixon's rather simple building book just for a little direction and to make I stay on sequence.

Greybeard,

Back to the thought of the last hurrah, I try to make it a point to never say this is the last one:)  I'm glad to see you starting this project.  I know how you feel about the fear of making mistakes, sometimes when I sit and think about what I need to do I feel sick thinking of possible mistakes.  I keep hoping for the gun that comes out perfect, but after reading what Don said about every gun he has built there has been mistakes I guess I will just have to resign myself to the fact that mistakes happen and lessons are hopefully learned in the process.  I would love for you to keep posting pictures of your progress, its like a great story.

So I blew most of my shop time yesterday and got the entry thimble inletted and this morning the middle one inlet & both pinned. The inlets look real good with no gaps so I'm happy.
The muzzle thimble will be done this PM after my back has a rest. Then shave the top of thr barrel to just so the barrel is a wee bit more than half exposed then I can do the lock inletting as the next step .   Bob

Yes Ken; I like it too,.  It's a Leonard Reedy profile of Fred Millers patterens that David Keck now has. David supplied the # 4 blank , inlet the .50 cal. B wt Collerain barrel, drilled the RR hole bang on. I couldent be happier. Cheers    Bob

OK folks. I'm ready to set the lock in and ??? should I set the lock dead center on the barrel or go for just a tad below the center line with the liner on dead center ???  Any thoughts here.
Cheers & thanks    Bob

Greybeard: set lock up for correct touchhole position and make sure front lock bolt will pass above rr hole, slight noch in barrel is ok.   Smylee

Just a thought; Did you think to oil or grease the bore of your barrel after soldering your under lug on? If you did'nt, it would be wise to prevent rust where the heat vaporised the oil film in the bore. Just trying to help BJH

So I'm getting nervous about the thickness of the forend ahead of the lock pannel'  The mike says .132 but it seems it will be tough to not have it come out kinda slab sidsd looking. Or do  you think I can pull it off OK  ????
Cheers    Bob

No problem.  I would draw what you have in cross section, with the barrel, ramrod groove, web, etc.  Then sketch in the oval shape you want.  This will help you figure out where the wood has to come off the most.  The key for me is knowing where on the side of the stock is the fattest part of the egg or oval shape.  Draw that line on your forestock and never take wood off there until final finishing.

Once I know where the fattest part of the oval is and know where the most wood has to come off I use planes and spokeshave to create the angles I need to begin to approach the oval shape.

So today I tapped a 10+32 hole in a piese of scrap and turned up a 10+ 32 liner. Was able to wiggle it a bit when 1/2  way in.  No good so turned up another 2 thou bigger.  Turnscrew tight.
Perfect so drilled and tapped the barrel.  NO MISHAPS.  Good for me.
