TVM rifles

I was thinking about getting a 36 cal flintlock, i saw one in particular on the TVM site their Tennessee poorboy looks like the style I like. Are they good guns?

I don't know about that particular model but I've had three Early Virginia's built by Matt Avance at  TVM and couldn't be more pleased...

Give them a call and chat a while. Ask questions. Then think about it, and call again. They are very helpful. I too have an "Early Virginia" that's not what the website shows. It's changed in a few ways from what you can see in their photos. Mine's a .54 cal by 42" octagon-to-round rifled barrel, stocked in walnut with great stump figure in the butt (and long LOP), and a round-faced lock. Fits me best of any of my 6 flinters. If you don't ask, you don't know what they can do. Their guns are not "only what you see on the website." They can customize a lot for you.

I'm very happy with my TVM.

I have one of the TVM SMR "poor boys".  I love that style and they ARE worth the wait.  You get it to your lop, the lock you want, etc; in other words you tell them how you want it built and they build it.  That simple.

I dont have the pleasure of owning a tvm made flintlock but I have had the pleasure of shooting one an seeing an holding others an I will tell you that they are very well made an shoot even better than they look. So you CANNOT go wrong choosing a TVM. Nuff said

I also have been longing for a .32 or a .36 for plinking.  TVM was one of the sites I kept going back to.  Would there be a huge disadvantage to having a shorter barrell, say around 28"?

The reason I ask is that the rifle is intended to serve double duty as an introductory gun..... to teach the grand kids how to shoot.  I think a muzzleloader in flintlock is the best way to really drill home the mechanics of shooting.

Reading you guy's posts makes me happy because I ordered two rifles from TVM. I ordered a .50 caliber early virginia rifle and a .32 caliber southern mountain rifle. I went with all steel furniture and super premium maple stocks on both of them.


I'm planning on buying a thrid rifle from TVM most likely a southern moutain rifle in .50 caliber. ;D

Me and my 14 year old son both own TVM rifles. Mine is a early lancaster, super premium maple stock in 40 cal, and my sons is a southern with an ash stock in 45 cal. We could'nt be happier. here's a little eye candy for you.

I got both my early virginia rifle ( 50 caliber ), and my southern rifle ( 32 caliber ) from TVM.  I couldn't be more pleased with both of them. Both rifles have super premium maple stocks, all browned steel furniture, and siler locks. The early virginia has a wooden patch box, and the southern rifle has a steel patch box. The southern rifle has a 3/4" wide barrel, and the early virginia has 7/8" wide barrel. Both rifles are beautiful.


So happy was I with the two TVM rifles I ordered another one. This time I went all out and ordered a TVM Grand Rifle in a late lancaster style rifle. I went with the best curly maple they have ( additional $300.00 ), plus I"m having them put on a three peice brass patch box ( western pennsylvania style ) instead of the wooden patch box they have listed for the grand rifle.


Next rifle will be a 40 caliber, either a southern rifle or a bedford rifle. I better sign the overtime book at work, "LOL"

I've heard the " beware of the guy that has one gun " before. But it's more fun to own a few different guns.

I would like to get three more flintlocks. A .40 caliber in a bedford or southern style rifle like I said before. But also I would like a fowler and a northwest trade gun. Maybe I'll try to build one of these from a kit. I'm pretty excited about getting back into flintlock muzzleloaders after approx: eighteen years. I made the mistake of saleing my rifles back then, I won't make that mistake again.

My nephew Jacob showed an interest in miniture black powder cannons, so I bought him one. We were shooting it this weekend, it was alot of fun. Maybe his interest will spread to black powder guns and I'd have a shooting partner.

Seeing this thread is still going on, thought I'd mention that not very long after my posts, an individual listed an as new .40cal Late Lancaster by Matt Avance here on the ALR.
Late Lancaster has the same basic design that I like and it had the components and wood I would have specified if I'd have ordered it...particularly a longer than average LOP...and here it was with no wait time to be built...really lucked out and got my .40cal after all...will be shooting it shortly.

And a couple days later I sold another T/C, a spare T/C stock, and a Marlin .30-30 I no longer used...somebody was looking out for me

I've heard of that too - but think it's a mith perpetrated by someonoe who could not or would not afford more than one gun.

As to the .32 cal. - I love shooting my little Tenn. rifle - with 35gr. 3F, it will shoot into 1" at 50 yards. Less or more powder opens those groups.  Some day, I'll experiment with 2F, just to see how it goes. I expect about 60gr. to be the best shooting 100yard load. I am hoping it will shoot under 2" at that range. it won't do it with 3F- so only left thing to do (other than try larger balls), is to test 2F.

   Maybe good shooters but too thick in the forestock for me.A little slab sided too. Must be a lot of web between barrel and RR channel.After owning a few customs,for me, it would be stepping backwards. Not arguing their shootability, I just don't like their looks. My $0.02 ...
