Simple Bullet Board
« on: April 16, 2011, 07:49:41 AM »
I had a friend who wanted me to make him some items out of olive wood he got from Bethlehem in the Holy Land.  I had some scraps left over and made him this little 4 round, .45 caliber bullet board.  It just has an oil finish, no stain.  Nice wood to work with and a second piece stained to a lovely reddish brown with aqua fortis.

Dave ... once again ... your talents are amazing.  The wood seems to have a little character there.

I learned from my first trip this past year to Arizona there are lots of olive trees in Phoenix and Tucson.  I understand they are slowly starting to get rid of them.  Any idea if olive wood could be used for gunstocks?
Many of them cried; "Me no Alamo - Me no Goliad", and for most of them these were the last words they spoke.

I really like the appearance of that wood.  What kind of density would you compare it too.  Would love to see the aquafortis color on this as well.  Nice work.

GRA,

I haven't seen any olive wood pieces big enough for anything but a small pistol.  The wood moves and checks quite a bit while drying, but once it is seasoned, it seems very stable.  It is hard (but not as hard as maple) and carves beautifully.

Ahtuwisae,

Here are a couple of pictures of scraps cut from the same piece as the bullet board and stained with aqua fortis (iron and acid, not just dilute acid...haven't tried that yet).  The first shows the two pieces with the grains rotated 90 degrees.

This second photo shows the same side half stained and half not.

The third photo is just a close up....the wood actually looks better than this in real life, but the color is well displayed in the photo.
