Just have to ask you Chris, is any of that carving raised (behind the cheek piece) or is it all incised?  I really like what you've accomplished with that incised carving.  Also, it looks like you've been really working on those 'varnish' finishes and with considerable success, it appears.

Some elements are slightly raised, but not much.

The varnish....  A LOT of work and trouble in the varnish....and it's still not really "perfected" by any means yet.

I like your carving but like the finish even more. One look shows you put a lot of time and effort into the finish.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I am especially fond of the area near the tang. Very crisp!

RCA Volum I, #4.  Wonderful incised tang carving.  Study how details are handled.  Incised carving at its best is much more than a parallel sided line.

Check out the Lehigh Allen Martin just finished for Dane, it has a lot of incised stuff on it, well done too.   He's a magician

  thanks chris; thats fantastic, great job, thats what i was looking for. what tools did you use? i've done three rifles years ago, and tried recently and didn't do so good, i guess i need sharper tools. i'll try again.

Pretty much entirely done with the narrower "V" tool (a Pfeil) and a small rounded gouge for cutting the little chip marks.  I had the hardest time with the varnish.  Hard to keep it from mudding up the carving.  So my carving actually looks better than it does here!   ;D

I generally push the tool with my hand, only driving it with a mallet on the tightest of curls.
