For those that are interested, a signed J. Sheets rifle is in the Rock Island Auction site.

Also listed is a J Roop, Lot 3227 and a John Drisbach, Lot 3224
A few other unsigned rifles and some nice contemporary are listed.

Although the description has many errors in it this is a John Sheets of Staunton (in Augusta County, VA) rifle. Notice the placement of the set trigger adjustment screw --- a local detail for the most part.

Too bad the picture doesn't include the cheek side but we can presume it is not carved. I'd say the estimate is high but time will tell.

Thanks Gary, I noticed the trigger adjustment and was curious as I've never seen one like it.
So would you say local to Augusta County at large, or local to John Sheets shop?

It's an interesting rifle, but it looks like the patchbox has been polished so much that the engraving is almost worn off.

John

John Davidson and a few other makers ocassionally used that horizontal screw as well. Davidson was south of Staunton on the upper James so it would be safe to say regional rather than county or shop.
