pistol front sight
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:43:34 PM »
I am building a pistol with a smoothbore oct/round barrel. I am going to make a small brass barley corn type front sight. The pistol is loosely based on the Mike Miller pistol tape. Is this sight historically correct for a flintlock pistol of that type?

Certainly, a barly corn sight would be OK. Pistol sights have a fairly wide range of variation. Every thing from inlayed cross and post(spider) to shallow dovetailed barleycorns to a simple inlayed brass or silver bead was used. Often pistols had no sights at all. But you really need to look at origional work be it in books or in person. This way you can make a educated choice of sight style for the pistol you are recreating.

I don't know what the Mike Miller pistol looks like, however, in the Library here there's several pistols with various types of sights on them.
Here's one example;
