S Guard/Militia Knife

Finished this one this morning. It's been a couple of years since I made a knife with a guard. This one was almost more fun than work, but was also very time consuming requiring a lot of hand filing. 9" blade of 01 vanadium tool steel. Through tang peened over a steel butt cap, in a grip of very nice curly maple, with chip carved rings. Grip is 4 5/8" in total length. All mounts and hardware on knife and sheath are of mild steel. All very lightly aged by the cold blue and bleach method. I hope you enjoy a look.

That's a beautiful knife.  Impressed with the sheath as well.  How many
hours in something like that?  What is the finish on the handle?   Impressive!

SUZKAT, the way I make knives, that is a full weeks work in the shop. A six day week. It is almost funny to me when someone says, " That much for a knife?".  It takes time for good detail. On something like that one, I just do whatever it takes to get the desired result, once I have a plan in my mind.   The finish is Minwax antique oil over Fiebings leather stain. Works very well for gunstocks also.

LRB,  Yes, I'm impressed with the finish.  It has the appearance of a
nitric acid and steel wool torched finish without the difficulty.  I think
I'll use that on my longrifle.  Thanks for your help.  Again, Super knife.

  If you want color similar to that, I used Fiebings spirit stain, medium brown. I sanded back with 400 grit paper to lighten the high grain. Then wiped a bit with acetone. The top finish is three coats of the Minwax, which has to be wiped back well before it sets for each coat. I find it a PIA on gunstocks because it sets in just minutes. I find it difficult to blend stops and goes, but it can be done.
