Need a new vise?
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:15:35 PM »
I'm not much of a tool shopper but as I was looking through a new Midway USA catalog I stumbled across the Shop Fox Gunsmith Vise (Product # 511-694) on sale at $42.99.
It looks like my old Versa Vise except for the green vs. red paint.
Don't know about the quality of this version but the design is very useful. I do about 80% of my work in mine --- everything from sheet metal and filing to stocking.

If you need a new vise this might be worth looking into.

I bought two of them from MidwayUSA last fall.  Quality is very good for the price and certainly adequate for my needs building rifles.  Worth more than they cost IMO.

Sigh , for some reason Midway trippels or quadrupels the price on everything they sell in Norway  :'(.
They want nkr 1064 = $200 for the same vice. :P

Does any know what the vice weighs. Might be and idea to ship USPS to Norway.

Best regards

If you shop around, you will find tilting jaws for that vise.  Grizzley has them.  They accomodate tapered shapes, and you can easily attach leather to the faces to soften the grip.  They lift straight out to allow for gripping items solidly.

Yes Grizzley has them but they are very easily made using thin blocks of scrape maple then glue leather faces on them. I use large rubber bands to hold them in place on the vise jaws. Easy to remove when you don't need them. Best of all they didn't cost me anything.

Tim- Boone, I tried amazon.com, they won't ship it to Norway. It weighs to much. Oh well, I'll make do with what i got.

You must have a tough time shopping if items made in China are off limits!

I use 2 of them. One for rifles (pictured) and one for knives.

I drilled & tapped the holes in the vice & installed teflon pads & then put leather over them.  The offset piece was made by  Holzum (Jerry Crawford) and it works quite well.  With the offset, I can tilt it up or down & swing it from side to side as well.

I suggest adding a 2x4 piece to the front of the bench so you can pull the vice out some to mount it. This makes it so you can put long items vertically in the vice, such as a barrel & not be obstructed by the workbench. I can hand a long barrel down & have the breech area at the vice to work in there if need be.

I bought two of them on sale at WoodCrafts for $ 39.95 each.

Check out the Universal Vise from Garrett-Wade.  It comes with the piece that allows you to tip the vise around a horizontal axis.
