She was made in 1872 and I believe the rod was made of English walnut ,although one suggestion is its mohogany. Fellas.any suggestion as to the wood and where I might obtain it
Lastlly,jury is still out as to which break hurt worse.

Bad luck on both counts!
I would suggest rosewood - it's usually available in dowel form at Woodcraft, is tough, and was commonly used on english guns of the period.

The original rod on my 1861 Manton is of hickory.  I use it for both shot and patched round ball.  The question is, "how good are the bores?"  If they are smooth, you should have no problems with breaking your rod.  The converse is also true.
