Rising Sun Horn
« on: May 13, 2011, 01:47:28 AM »
This began as an experiment to focus on architecture.  I did not follow any particular style.  It is a small day horn 9 1/2" on the inside curve and 11" on the outside curve.  No twist.  the base is 7" in diameter.  The base and spout plug are maple.  the throat is dyed with dk brown rit.  the body aged with sunshine yellow, and a pinch of brown.  the phrase on the body says: "Whether in Peece or in WAR, i will carry my contents faithfully.  For in either tyme it must be dry, To spark the hunt or set us free."  the rest is just whatever came to mind as i was dooling on the horn.

No glue, beeswax and maple pins, nice and airtight.  Staples are forges from 1/8 wire and bent over on the inside.

Enjoy!

Very nice horn. Did you mean 7" circumference?

I really like that horn, and a very interesting scrim design as well.  Nicely done, John, nicely done.

Got to be among the nicest horns I've ever seen. There's one to carry with pride.

Wild Willie has some competition! Super layout and execution.

Question: Did you cut your lines with a scribing tool? Clean and clear cuts.

Love that horn.

I agree with Rick, John. Your scrim is getting very nice. This horn may have just been a practice horn, but aren't they all?
Good job.

I have a long road t ohaul to get to Willie's quality but thank you Rick.  I used a coulter precision tip engraver and an exacto...for the little circles, a small drafting scribe compass.

Nice work, just the layout of those rosettes, for lack of a better word, is a job in itself.

Painful...might be a good word to describe that.  It is hard enough on a flat square and then you add curvature and angles...Oh My.  Well worth it though.
