Siler Locks
« on: May 18, 2011, 07:27:56 AM »
On the bottom of the lock plate there is a small flat spot, probably where the casting gate was.  I have noticed that some remove this and continue the bevel completely around the lock plate and some leave it.  Which is correct?

Example Gun building, SquirrelHeart's Early Lancaster take 4, first picture, bottom of lock just in front of the pan.  No reflection intended on SquirrelHeart that was just a picture that showed what I was referring to.

Only a guess, but I thought that was there to somewhat support the bottom of the mounting screw for the frizzen spring, because it's so close to the edge of the plate. I always leave it on, you really have to look for it to see it.

The plate was cast that way and should be left intact.   It is the area where the frizzen spring attaches.............Don

Like Don says.
The gates are on the BACK of the plate.
