Cutting The Patch At The Muzzle
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:16:42 AM »
Don't know if this has been discussed before or not, but how far into the barrel do you push
the ball with patch before you cut it? I thought I read somewhere a long time ago that it
was a 1/16 of a inch. I just made a starter that pushes the ball with patch in .065 . Looks
like the patch is covering the sides of the ball OK.  What do you all say?

As long as the knife can't hit the ball when I swipe it, I don't worry about it one way or the other.

Brownbear seems to have the definitive answer, not sure what anyone else could add.

My starter seats it for I end up with the patch wrapping around most of the front on my 50 cal.  On the larger bores it wraps less.  I don't think it matters much as long as it isn't close to overlapping it should open up fast and even as  the ball leaves the bore.  If you can cut across the muzzle without slicing the ball there should be enough patch.

Yep.  They are right.  Mine just happens to be just below the muzzle.  No reason.  Just worked out that way.

Yes, that is good. So if you use a caliber specific starter insure that the short peg is "just right". Some suppliers furnish multi caliber starters with grossly overlong pegs.  Lon

If cutting at the muzzle I use a starter that seats the ball just enough below flush to avoid cutting the ball.
