Very first build!

My daughters boyfriend has always wanted a flintlock, he had saved up and was able to purchase the parts at the Spring Shoot at Friendship last June. We bought the stock from Dick Miller behind gunmakers hall, the lock, bbl triggers and trigger guard we bought from Tip Curtis. Scott made the thimbles, and side plate, we worked on this rifle only 3 or 4 days a month Sat and Sun and a few evenings, he went home quite a few days with blisters on his hands, he was a very good student. The butt plate and nose cap are made from caribou antler. I will post a few of the sequence of the build, I didn't take near enough. BTW the bbl is a 7/8 .50 GM the triggers are Davis DST 004, the lock is the Late Ketland of Tip Curtis and Pete Allen.












































































  Thanks for looking! I enjoyed this build maybe because I had someone to pass the gunbuilding skills on to and also I got to know Scott a lot better, we started this in Nov. and just finished it up this last Sunday! BTW Scott went to his first shoot Sat, he had to shoot my flintlock because his wasn't quite finished yet, he shot every relay, he didn't win or even place but he is hooked DEEP !!

Steve, a great first effort and I am sure one that will be treasured.  It's a bit non-traditional for some of us old boys with the antler buttplate and toeplate.  You have some good lines there especially the shaping of the cheekpiece, comb and wrist.  Finish is really fine also.  Let us know if you have questions!

  It's not my first build but my daughters boyfriend, I was the tutor, the antler was his idea partly because I have one built by Don Kammerer that is similar but he was building on a budget also he also wanted something unique and shootable, I think he got more than he wanted!
 
   He is already planning a smoothy!!!

Interesting use of different materials.  I've seen other folks here lately using horn (mostly buffalo) for various rifle pieces.  Personally I find this very creative and wouldn't be surprised to find out the same thing was done back in the old days.

Very nice rifle and great workmanship.  The stain turned out great too !!!

I handled the stock at our club shoot this past  Saturday before it went together for the final time.  I like the lines of the stock as well as the stock finish.  I expect to have a chance to touch off a couple of shots.  Bet it's a shooter too.

That's a nice rifle, it has good lines. The nose cap is pretty neat, good idea. Is that a grease hole in a piece of antler?

It's good to see some younger folks taking  an interest in gun building, hope he sticks with it.

Thanks for all of the compliments and encouragement, I truly enjoy getting people involved in muzzleloading, this is the first person I have had that wanted to build a rifle that actually built the gun, most just stand and watch me build then they do the finishing and tell everybody they built it!

  Yes that is a grease hole in the piece of antler, we actually have some deer tallow (thanks to Pletch) to put in the tallow hole. (I killed the deer)

The stain is Homer Dangler/James Klein orange with reddish brown over the top, I'm always looking for the perfect color!

just look at the guns that where traded to the natives thay did all kinds of stuff like this to them

Thanks again for all the positive comments!  Here is the rifle that inspired him to use antler, it was built by Don Kammerer back around 1980 it was a .32 (Douglass) originally and I had Don fit a .40 GM bbl in 1996 just a year before he died. The bbls are interchangeable







I shot my very first 50 on a small 6 bull with this rifle @ Friendship!

Very clever use of antler, Steve.  You've done a good job and the lady should become a family heirloom.  But of course, you had everything going for you when you started.  With a name like Steve, one can't go wrong!  Cheers, Bookie

It's a lovely rifle for sure!

It's a wonderful thing that you took the time, energy and effort to share your knowldge with the young man! If more folks would do it, the Nation as a whole would be better for it!
