Barrel is down and pinned on my Edward Marshall.

Inletted tang, semi-inlet mistake that will be fixed.

Lock plate inletted and showing end of breech and touch hole position.

sideplate inletted.

First ever engraved screw. Man, is that hard!! I have to hold my GRS graver like a fork to follow the curve of the head. Any suggestions? I just clamp the screw in the vise and go to town. Emily Post would be proud.

By the way, in case anyone is wondering, I have given up on the Edward Marshall. The stock is too blocky, and thick. I have decided to try for a transitional rifle, like the John Schreit. I have Shumway's Jaeger Rifles and I like the looks of some of the engraving and metal work, so I've decided to follow along those lines. The side plate will be engraved similarly to one in his book.

.54._ 15/16+ 36. Heavy stocked and Longer then a yager but shorter than later guns.

Everybody agrees the Marshall rifle is almost in a class by iself when it comes to mass. Are you just changing the architecture of this stock or are you starting from scratch with a new stock?

In case you've not had a chance to follow all the chat about the Schreit rifle over the years, it is different now than when found (in England I believe). Legend says that when found, it had at least remnants of a non-metal guard (wood or horn), and a stepped wrist. The current guard is of a later style than one would expect for a 1760's rifle.

Different areas of the country use different terminology and the same is true among gun aficianados. "Transition rifle" is one of those terms like "Yankees" that may not be popular with everybody. I know the term is used everywhere (by real gun writers!) but some who have studied the longrifle for a long time feel the longrifle was always transitioning, and still is. "Early" works well for most everyone.

Rich, the reason I use that term is that it will have the lines of an American longrifle, but the heft and fancy engraving of a Jaeger. I'm using Colerain's 37" Marshall barrel in .58, so the gun will have some beef. But when I took measurements of the Marshall, it was too much. I may keep this gun to hunt with, and I'm old, so lightness matters. Thanks for your input.

Hey going back a number of steps, I like the stockmaker's pins you are using. The ones with the loops, Great Idea! I can see stages in the stocking process where these would be handy. I usually make a set of music wire pins earley, close to their estimated finished length. Usually I loose a couple of them to the shop gremlins in the building process.

Being new to this, I had to ask some of the more experienced, and they told me to use black Rustoleum. I just wiped it on with a paper towel and kept wiping until it was just in the cuts. Just happened to have some in the basement.

Almost got 'er buttoned up...

OOOPPS!

Now to the buttplate. But I have choices, and I don't like either one. I could use the bp from TOTW and braze on an extension because I want to engrave, or I could use the "acanthus leaf" butt plate from the same folks-but it is thinner and I like the fat butt

I also am no good at brazing.

This is a horn end I made for the ramrod, the other end has a copper tip threaded for 8/32 tools. I will open up the channel for the tip, and make a brass muzzle cap that form fits the tip, and engrave it. Does it sound like I'm having fun with the engraving?

I've decided to use the E.M. buttplate from TOTW and braze an extension on for the top of the comb, so I have a canvas for engraving. The butt plate fits so good already, just adding an extension should be easier than inletting the "acanthus" plate.

Now I have to decide on whether or not to have a patchbox. The gun I'm using for a model has none, it's a smoothbore. I've never done a wooden sliding one, and I have a Christian Oerter cast box I traded for.

Inletting the toe plate.

NOw it's inletted.

I made the toe plate in the Moravian style, with the little tab going into the toe of the buttplate. The original that I am using for a model has no toe plate, and has a rounded toe like a fowling piece. But I wanted to make this a piece that would have been very early in the longrifle calendar.

My next thing to make is a muzzle cap, the one sent me is way too small. I have scanned a pic from Shumway's book, "Jaeger Rifles", and wil try to simulate it.

I have made a u-shaped thing-ma-bob to try to copy the muzzle cap, I have silver soldered a cap on the end, and will layer brass on the sides to hopefully duplicate the muzzle cap.
