Swelling wood
« on: May 27, 2011, 09:18:53 PM »
I've seen  a couple of refferences to swelling the wood to fix small gaps in inletting.

It makes sense that a small gap can be closed by moistening the wood, but won't the gap reappear when the wood dries back out?

Swelling will only work if you have previously compressed the wood.  Depending on the inletting process, the wood may have been compressed or not compressed.

You can swell it only a TINY amount.  Soaking it with your finish will swell it up more, and still it won't be much (except for the lock inlet, which will get so tight that the lock will be near impossible to get in and out...  >:(  )
