original round faced lock- date and origin?
« on: June 04, 2011, 04:57:33 AM »
Here's a medium sized original lock with a couple interesting features; unlike most English round faced locks it had a detachable pan.  Also the tumbler notches are not at a right angle to the axis of the tumbler.  Origin and estimate of when it was made?  I might guess 1730 and Germanic but have little knowledge in this area.  What do you think?  What type of gun would it have been used on?  Seems small for a musket.

Looks like a horse pistol lock.

I'll just say "European" (Continental) and first half of the 18th century.  Pretty generic in form, though odds might make it Dutch.

Tumbler notches angled just from wear/refiling???

It's plenty worn.  The tumbler is all waggedy in there.  I might try to restore it to working function and use it.  Would that be wrong?  As is, it's not much of an heirloom/historical piece but might make sense being used in an early parts gun.  Or a horse pistol, an item i don't have but obviously need.

Hey a good functioning horse pistol certainly outweighs a museum use..... :o ;D  ;D

Very few will probably get to see it in a museum or private collection anyway. Make a photo essay of your restoration process and publish it on the web!! :) :) ;)

Tims suggestion sounds good to me too,,,
just don't use a roller bearing to take up the waggedy in the tumbler!  ;D
