Art is not an object.  It is the excitement inspired by the object.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand how someone could have figured out how to make that lock back in the 16th or 17th century.

Thank you for the pictoral 'ride' through a wheellock's workings.

There were drawings of a wheelock in Di Vichy's drawings the spindle was to thin when someone tried to make one but the idea was there. People back then weren't any less intelligent than now. We've just had longer to invent things basic intelligence hasn't changed.

Razspla,

I just had an opportunity to actually see all the pictures for about 30 minutes. All I can say is what an incredible pictorial tutorial! Thanks for taking the time to put it together, and I hope we see a lot more of you and your work from now on!

We could really use a Babelfish ;D.  Wish my skills as a craftsman were further along.  Would love to incorporate this mechanism into a Wallgun.

  Raszpla,

Thank you,  for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

As I understand it each wheelock had it's own spring vise the vise was not only for the main spring but the dog spring as well. Each wheelock being different meant individual spring vises as well. This one fits my wheelock (see first picture on this post) It has a hunter on one side engraved and a dragon on the other.

Did you fab that one Dennis or did it come with the lock?  Engraving looks like yours.  Interesting piece.  I hope you bring the matchlock and/or the wheelock along next weekend.

I made the lock and the vise from scratch
I just received raw spring for the Wheelock (some idiot broke the main spring) and haven't forged a new one so probally won't be next week end.
I have also started a new Wheelock mechanism for a whole new WL.
