Euro Styled 18th c. Dagger
« on: July 15, 2011, 11:18:44 PM »

Just finished this one. 6" blade of 01 steel, Grip is turned cocobolo, and is 4" to the top of the threaded brass ball retainer nut. brass ferrule with file decorated iron guard and domed iron butt cap which is threaded to the through tang, as is the retainer nut. I still have to make a sheath for it. Hope you enjoy a look.

Never met a Wick Ellerbe knife I didn't like.  This one is no exception.

Wick; This new item is every bit the quality of the two items you made for me. Thank again, Jim.

I made a larger version of that one a few months back, but with no ricasso. This one is a seven inch blade.

Wick - do you use the "stock removal method" or a combination of forge work and stock removal? Mighty fine work. How far are you from Delray Beach, Fl? I'm going to visit my mom in November and be there until February and I like to visit if you are near Delray Beach and open for visitors.

You are welcome to stop by. I use stock removal, but have to do simple forging on some things. By simple, I mean a propane/Mapp gas torch, vise anvil, and a ball peen hammer and pliers. I heat treat blades in a 22.5 deep digital controlled Evenheat oven.  I like using 01 steel, and that steel is not forge friendly without a good amount of experience, and requires higher heat and more care in forging than the simpler types. I would have to look at a map to find Delray Beach, but I'm guessing it is not real close.
