Way back around these parts when someone mentioned 'coal oil' he or she was referring to kerosene.

I use hickory for all my tapered rods. I have pulled several balls with them over the years. Never had one break....(knock on wood)

Periodically Dennis Glazeer gets big orders of Hickory blanks and you can buy from him in lots of 6 with mixed sizes.  You still have to select carefully, but the vast majority of his are straight grain.

Coal oil is a specific product made from distilling coal and shale, and the process was started in 1850... Beats me how it's done, I just read it and regurgitate it!

When petroleum kerosene was invented, it replaced coal oil, but the name coal oil stuck to kerosene as they were both used for illumination.

Now I wonder if the original coal oil is still made?
