1861 springfield
« on: July 21, 2011, 01:48:03 AM »
I have an 1861 Springfield rifle dated 1862 on the lock and barrel. It appears original with the exception of an extra proof mark. The eagle, P , and V are all in line and look correct but there is a mark stamped above the V that looks like the outline of calif. (dog legged rectangle).
Does anyone know anything about this mark? I have "The U.S. Model 1861 Springfield" book and the other proofs are correct for the Springfield armory.
Thanks, marlin 6666

Hi Marlin,
Are you sure that the mark is not a poor quality or worn stamping of the eagle head?  Without pictures it is pretty hard to guess what it could be.

Hmmm yeah I agree it's tough to know without pics, I've seen a re-proof a few times due to the first mark not being clear enough or if the sides are not symetrical then it could be somebody tried to alter/add the mark themselves.
