Iron Mounted Rifle, but not Flint
« on: July 23, 2011, 02:24:50 PM »
This is a rifle that I finished this past spring. I had this rifle at the Tennessee show earlier this year, but I had not had a chance to drill the nipple on the drum. It is finally finished. I had posted a couple of different post earlier this year showing how I forged the guard and also staining the wood.
The barrel is an Ed Rayle 36 cal 13/16". The lock is a Jim Chambers. The triggers started out as a single lever RE Davis. I did modify the triggers though. Everything else is made by me. The wood came from Freddie Harrison. It was the most curliest piece of wood that I have worked yet, but It was extremely dense, so I was a joy to work. This is not a copy of any particular style of rifle, but it has been influenced by the originals that I have been fortunate enough to view over the past few years.
Thanks for looking,
Marc

Beautiful rifle.  Very nice work.  The wood you selected is perfectly figured.  I like the percussion lock also.   ;D

Great Work!
Photography is not bad either!
How much of the iron work did you make.
The buttplate is awesome( inletting too), Where did you get the trigger guard?
Your choice of wood is well done! The grain and stain is great.
I'll even trade my spanish CVA.
My most sincere compliments.

Beautiful rifle.  Very nice color.  The finish has a nice sheen to it, but not too shiny.  I really like the butt plate.  Is the triggerguard a copy of an original?

Lots to like there, super clean.  Your guards are as good as they get.  How many hours go into a guard like that?

Very very nice. My first impresion was a nice working mans rifle but as I looked more I see all the little details and great job of putting the thing together. I would have to say a very nice and elegant working mans rifle. Its a keeper for sure.   Smylee

The gun is super neat overall, but that triggerguard is outstanding!!!

Fantastic Marc!  Having seen your work in person, I bet the pictures don't do it justice.

This is one of the best rifles I have seen in a long time. The wood finish and color is as good as any on the firing line bar none. The butt plate and trigger guard are outstanding. The set trigger, the side plate and the metal to wood fit are very well executed. The metal finish WoW. This rifle would like GREAT in my rifle rack. Thanks for the pictures. Jim & Alyce.

The word "crisp" comes to mind to describe your work. Very nice--even if it is percussion.  ;)

Beautifully elegant and balanced design with each element complimenting every other element. Really like the butt plate. Whose lock did you use?

Marc,
Since I met you in Lexington a few years back, your work has just continued to improve. This is one of the nicest rifles I have seen in a long time. The quality of the wood, the execution of the details and the assembly of the package leave nothing to be desired. Reminds me some of a Vincent, with a modified comb. Are you still in the Columbus area and if so you should consider coming to our Association of Ohio Longrifle Collectors Newark show in November.

Marc,

Now that is just outstanding.  Excellent job all the way around.  Thanks for letting us see it, it is a testament to simplicity.

Ooooo...

Now that is a beautiful rifle! The wood is gorgeous. The fit and finish, the lines, the balance is exceptional.

That's what I want to aspire to build when I get to build. I'll have to take notes on your construction and bookmark this page!

Now, I don't suppose you have something in a flint we could drool over do you?

Thanks eveyone for the kind comments. I really had a lot of fun building this rifle.
To answer everyone's questions

Old Ford - I made all the iron work guard, buttplate, ramrod pipes side plate toe plate ect. I only modified the R.E. Davis triggers.

G.T. - the guard is not a copy of anything in particular. I just tried to incorporate some elements from numerous other original rifles some brass some iron. While not copied off of an original I attempted to come up with something unique.

Rich - I had kept track of my hours on the guard, but I never went back and added them all up. They usually take me a long time. I really try to keep the curves clean and not kinked ect.

Okie Boy- The lock that I used was a jim chambers southern mountain percussion lock.

Smokin Buck- I am still in the columbus area for a while longer. I will definitely try to get out to the ohio longrifle collectors show this fall.

Mark...very fine workmanship and attention to detail.  Fit and finish are wonderful...way out ahead of most originals I think.  Looks like a great design to shoot.  Fabulous stick too.
