I don't hunt the hard way, I hunt a simpler way.

Where your eyes tell you it should be. Really it is all individually eyesight dependent. I would stick one on with dbl sided tape and try it over the course of the day just to be sure.

I'm almost afraid to try and find out...

The older I get the further down the barrel that sight moves!

Rear sight location. I install sighting when the rifle is almost completed. I use double sided tape. Stick the rear sight around the lower ramrod thimble area, top of barrel, move the rear sight until the sight picture becomes clear in my eye. Now that age is not in my favor, I have had to move my rear sights closer to the muzzle end of the rifle. Good shooting. AJ

A lot of the orignals have the sight in the vicinity of the rear pipe, usually about 12" or so from the breech. A slight problem with this location is that it is usually close to the balance point, so the sight ends up in the carrying hand. A low sight is fine with this placement, but taller sights begin to get in the way, although it's still better than a sight you can't see.

Some sights are wide with fairly sharp wings. If that's the case, it will have to be in front or behind the hand's postion when carrying the rifle.  If narrow or dull, like my express sight, location is where you put it. Some of us would need it right behind the font sight to focus - there is a limit in placement, where the 'eye sight placement rule' fails.

It becomes a toss-up between sight radius and clarity. Of course, appearance will also rear it's head if the placement is too far down the tube.

Use two sided tape and stick a sight on the unfinished barrel and check it for a while before you make up your mind.  I have in the past stuck 'em on with a drop of super glue and shot said gun at the range.  A little heat and a gentle tap will knock it right off.

10 to 12" is a good starting place for most folks. The NMLRA rules state that rear sight must be a minimum of 6" in front of the breech for their traditional matches. The eye can only focus on one point at a time, and the main focus should be on the front sight which means that the rear will be out of focus regardless of where you put it if you are concentrating on the front sight. So you need to place the rear sight at a location that does not interfer with seeing the front sight clearly but allows you to see the rear sight well enough to line the sights up. Only you eyes can tell you where that spot is. :-\

Width of rear sight slot makes a big difference in front sight clarity and placement.

With a rear sight slot of appropriate width the front sight will be clear and sharp when viewed thru the rear slot. You get some light on either side of the front sight, and you can easily put the front sight right between the two vertical walls of the rear sight slot.

If the rear sight slot is too narrow, the front will appear fuzzy or you might have the appearance of two front sights.  :o

if the rear sight is slot too wide,  you will have difficulty placing the front sight in the middle of the slot.

I make a fake rear sight out of black electrical tape, and keep nipping the slot wider until I get the picture I like. The slot width is also a function of distance from the eye, so keep that distance consistent when experimenting.

Try that, or try getting younger.
