Pewter on Horns
« on: August 01, 2011, 04:58:48 AM »
I had a thought,  after figuring how to put pewter rings on the cane I made for my Granddad  I started wondering ..  Has anyone seen pewter used on powder horns before, either as bands or another form of decoration?

If so will you point me in a direction so I can do a little research??    Thanx  Rich

Rich,

I know that I have definitely seen pewter used on powderhorns, specifically on the front end. Let me see if I can find it for you.

I've done bands on horns in pewter where I may have drilled through or something.  It is basically the same process as pouring a pewter nose cap, those were the instructions I followed.  I think it turned out great.

Pewter is fairly common on horns. Repair or strengthening of tips, decoration, bands, to name a few uses. If you're going to cast it in place on the horn, you should try to keep the pour thin so it cools quickly. It will damage the horn if it stays too hot for a very long period. I'd suggest you practice before doing it on a masterpiece that is almost finished.
