Book on the 1800 PA woodsman and his clothing
« on: August 02, 2011, 09:04:45 PM »
I am trying to be politically correct in my clothing selection  portraying an 1800 pa woodsman.
Are there books or articles on such clothing worn by pa woodsmen? I have learned not all shoes or boots are acceptable.
I have been to Daniel Boones Plantation and reviewed some books there with little luck. I really don't want to fall into the buckskin clothing unless thats all they wore back then.

Like your Lawyer or Accountant might say, it depends. You will have to offer up more details on your personage. Are you a farmer? Merchant? Tradesman? Teamster?

Do you live on the edge of the wilderness, in a small community?

While Mark's book is excellent it is based much earlier than 1800 - many changes in that 40 odd years and the days of the longhunter, which is the basis for Mark's writings, were long past.

One book that comes close to your time and plac is Meshach Brownings "Forty-four years of the life of a hunter: being reminiscences of Meshach Browning" it is based mostly on the period 1795 - 1839 and in Maryland. The book is available on line for free and is downloadable in PDF format.:

For a brief overview of Browning, this is not too bad a read......

You might also like to check with the folks on this forum - some of the folks who visit there are very knolwedgable about the time and place you have chosen - you do have to register though to ask: http://thecolonialfrontier.proboards.com/index.cgi

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Look for a little book named "Recreating the American Longhunter" by Joseph Ruckman.
An internet search will show several sources.
