Plug for RE Davis
« on: August 05, 2011, 12:53:04 AM »
I bought a cast tomahawk head and drilled maple handle from Tim at RE Davis, on behalf of a friend, and this is how it turned out.

The head needed a couple of "taps" with a light sledge on the anvil to straighten the blade ( was warped a little toward the bit), filed according to the cast in decoration, and polished to 320 grit.  Then I cold blued (BC Super Blue) the blade, and burnished it on a medium wire wheel.  The handle was stained with ferric nitrate, finished with linseed oil then waxed.  I added some brass escutcheon nails for decoration, a horn mouth piece, and a moose antler clean out plug.

This is the third tomahawk I've bought from the company (all different) and I like them all.  This set cost me $83 Cdn landed here in the Great White North.

Really nice, a beauty, the colors are Great.
I have bought a number of heads from Tim and they have all been nice, no voids and they work well.

Taylor,
Very nice looking hawk. Did you request the handle, it has super curl?

I just ordered his standard curly maple handle.  Actually,  the previous handle had nicer curl...more vivid.  Although it is certainly uniform, the curl is not very "loud".  Even so, it looks fine.  Thanks for your comments.
Regarding Tim...I have dealt with him on quite a few occasions - ordering 'hawks, barrels, lock parts, etc, and always get the same great friendly service.

That's something, coming from you Stuart!

This is the second 'hawk that I've finished this way.  I'm going to apply the cold blue to a pistol barrel, and burnish it off, to see how it stands up.  I really like how even the blue turns out with this system.  It resembles rust blue in texture and colour, but cannot be nearly as durable.

Very excellent Taylor! The color on the head is very impressive. Very fine work all over.
