Schutzenfest Cup 1898
« on: August 08, 2011, 06:06:21 AM »
Here is a hallmarked and makers marked .80 silver Swiss Schutzenfest Award Cup from 1898.
How rare is it to find a cup like this?

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

That topic came up this weekend at the Prairie States gun show...it seems Schutzen awards here in America were handed out by the tables full...everything from china cups and plates to regular trophies depending on the event and level of skill demonstrated....what the survival rate for those awards is I dont know, especially since folks today may be hard pressed to identify a shutzen award tea cup from a regular old one and unfortunately throw them all into the garbage in the same box. I hit alot of antique malls and junk shops and never see anything schutzen related, and Im pretty close to some big centers of schutzen activity :'( Curt Johnson may be able to field this question better than anyone else on the board?

The Swiss cup is very common.  In Europe the value is 80 - 200 euro.

Drink beer and grog from it and be happy.

I'd sure like to see some more examples.  Anybody have some they can post?

Like the other posts, I have been in a lot of junk stores and antiques "malls" in the east and out west, and I have never found anything Schuetzen award related.  I truly love the German and European awards.  They are alway highly decorated and alive with tradition.  Thanks for posting this sweet cup.

Glad you enjoyed it.  It's dated 1898 around the top.  It was made for the
Swiss National Schuetzenfest that began in 1824 and was held every other year or so and still is held today but only about every five years.  I've seen several examples of the 1926 cup on Ebay, but it's not nearly as intricate.  I'd like to find
an American shooting award some day.
