need advise on stock blank
« on: August 08, 2011, 10:03:16 PM »
i recently received a curley maple blank that has the barrel channel already cut for a b weight 45 cal i had wanted to build an issac haines style rifle.
the problem is the blank is 2 inches wide instead if 2 1/2 like i had requested
i don't think i have enough wood for a nice cheek piece
can any one recomend a style or school that will let me use a thinner but plate
so i can have my cheek piece
i won't add wood to the stock or return the blank...

Make a later Lancaster rifle out of it like a Fordney, etc.

i would send it back if you said you want one thing and they send you something else it seems
right to me that the person who made the stock should give you what you orded in the frist place

Is the barrel inlet on the center line of the blank or is it off set to the lock side. If the latter you have a lot more wood to work with in the cheek area.

How about a little cast off to gain a tiny bit of cheek? 1/4" is a 1/4".  I know I'm not much help ::)

I'd send it back and hope for better luck on the next one.

If they sent you a too thin blank then send it back.  2" is a cheaper piece of wood than a 2.5. If you paid for 2.5 and they sent a 2" they ripped you off.
Options.
Offset the buttplate to give 1/4" cast off, if the buttplate is narrow enough and this will give more wood for the  cheekpiece.

I use 2" blanks for my mountain rifles quite a bit. Even with 1/4 castoff I still barely have enough wood for a shallow cheekrest. I doubt you will be able to get enough for a Issac Haines style but you should be able to get a southern mountain style out of it.

I once built a cherry stocked Dreppard using 1 7/8" thick wood. I had Fred Miller dup his pattern and we both thought there was enough wood but even cheating on the patchbox side the cheekrest was a good 1/4" short. I glued a piece of the same wood on the cheekrest when finished I cut an incised line down the glue joint (which you could barely tell was there) and when finished with it even I had a hard time detecting where the extra wood had been added.

Send the incorrect stock blank back and get what you paid for. This stock sent to you does not get it. Why work around the problem when the mastake is not yours ?? AJ
