I figured that this info was reasonably reputable because it came from a period obituary.  Of course that's assuming that the guy who posted it didn't rearrange it, but it can all be verified through the Urbana Daily Courier newspaper.

Is this the same George Fondersmith that lived in Gratiot, Ohio - Licking County? I live very near to this town and I know there was a George Fondersmith that made rifles there.

Yes, this is the same George Fondersmith who worked in Licking County, Ohio. He was listed as a gunsmith in Champaign, Illinois, beginning in 1878. At that time he was in partnership with his son-in-law, Koratis B. Taft, as Taft & Fondersmith.
