This is a llittle gun built for my nephew Scott. He did most of the inlet work and I did the rest. Berrel is a Rice A 44" .40 smooth. The iron was forged by Scott and me. Chambers Colonial lock.

Thanks guys.

I have not put it on the scale yet. I'll try to talk him out for a day next week so I can take it to work and put it on the UPS scale. It's not very heavy thought, stock is red maple and the iron is thin.

By the way, the antique finish took a year to do so far. It was left in the white with file marks at his request. He kept telling me "you're going too far with the finish work".

Hi Rick, the other one looks about like it did the last time you saw it. Been working on other guns that already have a home waiting for them. We will be at the fort for the this too. See you there.

Cool!- why is the rear sight so far down the barrel - any particular reason?

btw- I had a .44 smothbore that shot very well with round ball - good enough for bunnies to 50yards. It also shot 1/2oz of shot nicely - broke 10 straight with it - once.

Bentflint, Did you build it from a blank - or use a pre carve? Very nice looking little gun. Like the early look - wide flat butt. Don't usually see that on a small calibre gun. Tom

What you write and what you mean are often diametrically opposed to one another and depend on the assumptions of others.  It's a way of stretching the truth to make yourself look better.

Examples:
1.  I have been building guns for 30 years.  Truth...I screwed together a CVA kit in the 70's and just finished a Pecatonica kit gun.
2.  I have experimented with various stock stains.  Truth....A guy sent me some samples of home-made aqua fortis, ammonia and tobacco, and Dangler's so I stained up some boards and posted my results on the board.  Infers the individual made his own.
3.  I hand forged this knife blade.  Truth...I ground it out of a blank and then heated and hammered on it to add scale and hammer marks.

These are actual examples that have been posted on message boards.  Also, many will hang out on one board for a couple of years under an assumed name and get his education.   He will then leave that board and join another where he posts frequently and appears to be an "expert" to the unwashed masses."

I assume nothing when omissions are present.

Have never shot skeet, yet knew what Daryl was saying.  And much as I hate to agree with TOF he's most likely correct.  Glad I can say I most of the time have no clue what I'm doing, if I don't I'll tell you. I document most of what I do with pics so no one can say you didn't do that.  I have that happen quite frequently were I work.  I show them my proggress and finished piece so there's no question

I've been shooting trap since the early 70's, with a 12 ga. trap gun.   Also shoot skeet where the normal range is about
21 yards, with a 20 ga. skeet gun, but shooting trap with basically a 410 with a 1/2 ounce of shot is, well,...hmmmmm.

I place no value on my credibility, Don, but I saw him do it.  I don't think it was an out-and-out brag:  just Daryl making a point about the versatility of a smooth rifle.  And Mohammed Ali said it isn't bragging, if you can do it.

When you shoot modern american trap you shoot from 16 yards, unless you are shooting handicap, but I know some that shoot trap with muzzleloaders from less than that. It can make a difference and how fast the thrower sends them out there will also make it different between the two, modern or muzzleloader.

Some people pick a small point and make a big show out of it, it brings them lots of attention and increases their message count.  I usually just ignore him and move on.  If you don't put wood on a fire it will soon burn out of it's own accord.

Look fellows,

I knew what Daryl meant, and I thought the milkjug comment was an attempt at being funny.

I've never seen any of you all, but I take what you say at face value. I assume you mean what you say, and say what you mean. If I was to question everything said, I would have a very poor experience on the forum. I ask questions meant to amplify the understanding, not to question the character of the person.

Not cool dudes, not cool at all. I would end this here before Mr Dennis does.

By the way thats a really nice smoothbore that you put together bentflint, I've frequently wondered about the smoothbore rifles and there capabilities. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for staying on topic.

Daryl, rear sight set for a old guy, witch the owner plans on being before it get pried from his cold dead hands.

Talgan, we didn't make the lock, barrel or screws. Everthing else was made here in my shop. Lock is Chambers, barrel is 44" A Rice and screws are from MBS. Stock is a red maple blank that was a reject because it was bent at the lock. Thats how we got the cast and drop that makes this little gun what it is.

Everbody else, if you want to talk skeet, bring your a** to Kansas, bring your money and we'll talk about what happens on another board. I play mordern gun games too.

We were standing only 10 yards behind the trap - yeah - kinda cheating, but not if everyone does it. The double navy Arms 10's and 12's lost that day. Don was right - 1/2oz. & 40gr. of powder. Just lucky - no power and most were broken into 2 or 3 pieces only, just enough to punch my card.

Bentflint - understand the sight placement.  That charge, 1/2oz and 40gr. should work well in the .40. I didn't mention in this thread (I have in others), but I did lapp in about .004" to .005" jug choke, tetween 1"and 4" back from the muzzle- that 3" section had the choke.  It didn't hurt round ball shooting (snowshoe hare heads at 50 yards) which was really good, but sure evened up the pattern - better that most any .410's with 3/4oz, about par with 1/2oz which is better if choke not to tight.

If the barrel blows the patterns, empty spaces, I'll try to explain how I lapped it. pm please.

Looks great...admire the skills it takes to do that...I struggle to cut a straight line aross a 2x4.

I like smaller smoothbores and had an Early Virginia built this year with a Rice 42" B-weight .54cal smooth.
Deer load is 2.x" at 50yds from a seated hunting position, and shot loads of #5s riddle little 3.5" tuna cans at 25 yards...going to be an excellent hunter.

I guess this .40cal smoothbore is essentially a squirrel/rabbit gun ?
