A friend gave me a copy of a 1982 Navy Arms muzzleloading annual.  Noticed this photo.  Can you all ID that young looking fellow in the front?

That is correct. This picture dates from about 1972-3 and I had been out of the Army about 18 months. Thats how much hair grows in that time!  :)

This official photograph was also a post card.

It and several other early Gunshop photos are on my web site. The SW Virginia rifle I was carving is shown there as well. The rifle in the foreground was made by Wallace Gusler in 1967 and had one of our very first forge welded barrels.

That photo sure makes me feel better about my photos in the Foxfire 5 book taken about that same time.  Oh to be that young and hairy again.

Hey, Gary,

Heard round-a-bout that the Gunshop at Williamsburg has closed. True or not? If so, tempory (due to economy) or permanent? We are (were) planning a trip out there this coming Spring, but if the gunshop is closed, I don't know if I want to go. Lots of stuff to see there, but the gunshop was my main focus on our last trip there . . .

I have moved my reply to Otter to a new thread called Williamsburg Gunshop posted by Rich on November 12th.  It seemed that we had highjacked the long haired thread with current issues regarding the shop.

Thanks for the explanation. The correct site of the shop or not to some of us it will always be the the site of the old Gunsmith shop.

Thanks for the explanation, Gary. Now the $10,000 question - What is the anticipated date of the move? Next week, next year, two years? We really do want to get back out there and I would like to have the gunsmith shop/artisans up and running when we are there. The trip we made in Oct 2000 was the best vacation we have had, and that's not just me saying that, my bride even said it first. Weather was great, people were great, food was great and aside from the gunsmith shop we also got to see the bricks being fired (a once a year event) which made the trip all the more memorable. For those of you who have not been to Colonial Williamsburg, do what you can to get there, it is well worth the trip.

Sure would be neat to have it moved by the April 5/6 dates for our Southern Longrifles Show. http://www.valongrifles.com/southernlongrifleshow/

Dennis,
True but even if the move is not complete they should be able to allow a "behind the sceens" look at the move in progress and discuss the future plans.

Gary

 That would be neat.
