Hide Glue, PVAs, or Epoxy
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:34:14 AM »
Hi guys,

There was a discusion on the relative merits of certain solvents with respect to epoxy, and it got me thinking...

In cases where you have to glue two pieces of wood together, for whatever reason, what is you prefered glue?

I've used PVA like tightbond to glue wood together, and I have been very pleased by the results. I've also used epoxy, but not stuff specificly made for wood products nor for bedding. I have used hide glue, the real heated in a pot stuff, but that was 40 years ago. I fully intend to start using it again for some furniture projects I have in mind.

Thanks for your time!

Best regards,

Hide glue can be removed, or un-glued with the application of heat and water.  Common disassembly technique for guitars and violins.  I keep super glue handy at the stocking bench for the occasional chip-out.  Stain before gluing.  Accra-glass is the best epoxy, the putty is very handy'

One of the various carpenter glues for wood. Titebond etc. clamp with surgical tubing most times.
Epoxy and super glue have their uses. But I have never been satisfied with the various super glues. thin, thick etc.
Epoxy is great for somethings and I use it quite a bit but NOT generally the fixing chips or cracks in stocks.

I avoid epoxy like the plague. I have NEVER had real success with it.  No matter which one I tried.

I use Titebond II or III.  I need to learn to use hide glue.  It seems to last forever!  :D

Yep hide glue is good and it does last forever, but heavens for the sake of, when you are done do not forget to unplug the double boiler you are using to heat it. The smell is atrocious! Not a good thing to smell when you open up the shop in the morning.  :o

Takes a good while to air out the room(s). (Actually - the whole building.)

If you are in a hurry to find out what the smell is like, you can just try "enthusiastically" smoothing off the end of a horn on a belt sander. ;D

Some more  first-hand experience I suspect. I have the best luck with Tightbond II.
