Wooden patchbox lid heigth
« on: September 05, 2011, 06:28:56 PM »
How thick,or how much should a wood patch box lid be above the profile of the stock?  Early lancaster style.

Thanks,
Bill

I find anything taller than 3/16" to look lumpy.

Thickness of a well shaped lid varies along the length.  Somewhere around 5/16" give or take a bit seems typical at the thickest portion.  It tapers quite a bit in thickness from the base to the tip.  Too thick doesn't look good, but neither does too thin in my view.   I see a lot of contemporary box lids that don't have a pleasing shape.  Many look too big and don't have enough taper.  Some are way too thick and others seem big and flat.  Study original guns having lids believed to be original to the gun.

Jim and Rich,   Thanks for the replies.  Is the taper even?   Or just tapering down at the end?

Thanks,
Bill

It's certainly not an even taper.  I guess you could say the amount of change in thickness sort of scales with the change in width.  It's just a natural way of shaping such a shape.

Viewed from the side the taper will be a little rounded, sort of an arc.

it's yours do what looks best to you there is not a set length and width I've seen wide ones and narrow ones .That's what makes this stuff unique it's your own creation. part of you go for it.
