I would locate a supplier in Europe.  Wood dealers worldwide are known to be crooks and shysters. When you find one go there and hand pick the wood you want.

I have about ten tons of European Walnut,  How many do you want?

See what I mean?

Dunlap has European Walnut that is US grown sometimes.
I bought a pretty nice piece from him for a English sporting rifle I built.

There are a lot of dealers but finding a piece with appropriate dimensions can be hard i.e. very thick or very long or with lots of drop.  Those mentioned are all good.
Be prepared for sticker shock for a very good piece.

I bought some nice wood from Ron Scott. He buys with gun stocking in mind.

Wayne Dunlap is another good one. I bought some nice Eastern English walnut from him.

If Ron S. doesn't have what you need, contact Murat at www.hunterbid.com .  I built an English sporting flint from a "mannlicher" length blank that was 48".  Layout and grainflow was perfect.  Wood was properly dried and a pleasure to carve.  I have known Murat for 18 years and have purchased several blanks from him.  Never a bad purchase.  Try calling him at 603-433-8908 in New Hampshire.  Tell him that Ed Dillon sent you.  Remember the old adage, "you get what you pay for"

I've also bought some dandy blanks from Murat for modern work.  Here's one of this mannlicher blanks that's longer and thicker than usual and extremely pretty in a european walnut sort of way.

I got a great long piece with a wormy buttstock from Wayne Dunlap at Dixons Fair.  If Mike Brooks had been there I would not have had a chance.
