crown of the under hammer
« on: September 13, 2011, 12:13:30 AM »
Gun shoots great but very tight bore used .440 ball + .015 patche tore 2 patches . There is a small step, thinking of a tapered stone to take it off than the polish . Give me your two cents

Don't use a stone unless it is very fine grit, and you can keep it square when you use it. You would do better with a good ball file running slow in a hand drill. The best way to go would be to have it re-crowned by a competent gunsmith on a lathe. Stones wear away as you cut, and they don't always wear evenly. A proper sized ball file will cut very evenly, and very accurately, but it has to go slow and not chatter. A ball file most often will do as well as the lathe for a problem such as yours,  but the lathe is the ultimate best answer.

I'd personally take the muzzle down flat,,removing the rounded crown and that 'step' in the process.
Hand file it square. it doesn't take alot of time. A lathe would be my choice too, but mine's not large enough capacity so the trusty files get such tasks.

I don't care for the large rounded crown, but that's just an excuse in this case to take it back and get rid of the step I guess!

Then lightly break the edges of the rifling for a new crown.

I've never tapered the muzzle but have seen a couple of tools used to do that on the forum here.
Seems like a way to go for easy loading. Maybe it has draw backs I'm not aware of.

I had the same problem with a 45 cal. underhammer (perhaps the same gun?) and got great results with a .437 ball.

Frenchman,
I would not use any stones or files on the muzzle. What you show in the picture looks perfectly good to me. H&A barrels, especially the Numrich brand, are notoriously small. The .45's are .44's and the smaller .435-.440 balls with a .010-.015 patch should work. If you want to stay with the .440's I would try a pre lubed .010 patch or a dry patch with a good liquid lube such as Hoppes 9.
