Help in identification
« on: September 16, 2011, 09:10:22 PM »
Good afternoon,

I am new to posting to this forum and I need help in identifying this rifle's origins.  My son and I are just beginning to
enjoy these wonderful old rifles and are in no way experts therefore we ask of your help.  Thanks so much and take care.

Probably no need to do that.  Your last img has a backslash in front of it instead of a bracket [

I tried editing the post to add the proper / and [ but the pictures still did not appear.  It's above my expertise.

JCKelly,
I agree, it looks as though they aged everything with some kind of chemical. The trigger guard looks original but the rest appears to be a crude attempt. I can't remember seeing anything like that on a patchbox lid before.

Pulling the lock and butt plate, revealing the raw wood would give you additional info that would be helpful.

I'm sure it's a contemporary made rifle as well.  It's possible that they could have used some old parts when it was made and it was probably put together in the 60's or 70's.  I doubt that the maker was trying to deceive anybody (not much chance of that anyhow) it was probably just made to be a shooter.
