Rice Barrels

 According to their site they are going strong and will expand their operations in the fall. A good indication gun build is going strong. I was real pleased with my last barrel from them(app. 2 mos. ago) as the outside finish was approaching the inside finish!

My 44" swamped "b" profile Rice will need a little filing, but over all I am very impressed.  I will definitely buy more from Rice.  I also want to try a Getz on my next project.

I have two .54 rice swamped 38 inch barrels an love them (excellent shooters) an will most certainly use them agian in the future, but for my next build I am going to try a charles burton barrel cause I hear great things on his barrels too :)

Typically, a Match barrel is one that has square cornered rifling with very narrow lands, .010" to.012" deep and comes from a maker of especially accurate barrels that are hand lapped with lead lapps after rifling.  The lapping trues up the interior and provides a smooth finish free of any chatter or rifling tool marks with all internal machining marks running rear to front or vise versa, but not an ironed burnished finish such as happens when a button is dragged through.  That's my take on it.  I do not know if any muzzleloading barrel makers air-gauge their barrels as modern ctg. barrel makers do - maybe? - doubt it.

 About 6mos. ago I had a Geo. Kreps finished for me using Rice's 46" .50 cal. Bwt.
The guns a real sweatheart that finished out at 7.66 lb. without the RR, weighed on a certified(UPS) scale.

What profiles did you guys put the 46 into?  I know somebody may post that this is not correct, but I am considering putting one in a Bedford.  Although no Bedfords that are known used a swamped profile I wanted a longer barrel Bedford that is a little better balanced than a straight or tapered barrel would provide.  My thoughts were to have the slimmest possible forearm with the Bedford small butt, and maintain a little balance.

I've used the 46" barrel in a Krepps, Armstrong, and several Virginia Piedmont rifles.  I love the profile and balance achieved with these barrels, and the ones I shot, performed very nicely.  As to the Bedford consideration, that's up to you.

If you're looking for something slim, I'd take a look at the new "A" weight profile that Rice has.  I don't believe it's available in 46" (42" or 44"?), but it's a wonderful profile that makes for a very nice and slim piece.  Plus, you can get it up to .50 cal.  Best of luck!

Taylor built an 44" "A" weight with flat bottomed grooves (I think) in .40 Cal. on his Kuntz rifle.  It holds amazingly well- a wonderful shooting & accurate rifle - very easy to hit with. In .50 cal, I'd not be able to shoot it well - to light. I suspect of in .45 cal., it might be to light for good holding as well. It would 'match' up with a Bedford, as the Kuntz has a tiny, slim stock - like a Bedord in weight, I'd expect. The "A" weight makes for a very small, dimensionally, lightweight rifle. Going too large in the calibre would make it to light to be accurate imho.

Correct Daryl, I am a little shy of the "A" barrel in too big of a bore, too little wall thickness for me.  B weight for sure in 50 is what I have planned.

   I have a Bwt. Rice .50x 44" in a JP Beck that is a super little barrel.Wrapped in wood,she weighs in at 7.25 lbs. I haven't seen the 46" offering but I'll bet it's a beauty. Taylor might have a profile picture to post, I'll ask him. I think the Awt. 50 would make a super slim rifle, but be a bugger to hold.
