Emery & Crokus paper (cloth)

Folks:

I live in the Northeast and have noticed that no retail stores, are stocking and selling Emery or Crokus (cloth).  I was told at the local NAPA store and a couple of local hardware stores that 3M had discontinued selling 9 x 11 sheet of the emery cloth and the only way I can buy it is a box of 50 sheets.  I was also told that Crokus cloth is no longer available.  I was wondering if other folks are finding it tough locating a source for the suff?   I use emery cloth alot for the intermediate clean-up on most of my metal castings, locks,  and barrels.  I see a bunch of new fangled resin papers and sticky backed abrasive papers  am I missing out on a new product that I should be using instead of Emery paper?

I use the 3M films for some of my work now.  Specifically to sharpen chisels and knives.  Look up the Scary Sharp videos for how.  After taking a carving class from Jim Kibler and Ian Pratt I learned that my standard of sharp didn't equal theirs with the stones I used so I tried the 3M abrasive films.  NOW they are sharp to Shick/ Gillete standards.  Don't know if these films will work in lieu of Crockus cloth or emery paper, but I think they will.  Just go to 3M website to see the products and descriptions.   You can still get the emory in rolls at Harbor Freight.

I have 6 lifetimes supply of emery paper. I have not been able to find crocus cloth.  Diamond coated sticks and cloth seem to be the replacements.... work well too... hm just ordered some of the 3m PSA film to try.....

Wonder how the film would work when backed with Duck Tape as per a recent tutoria here on ALR?

Emery and Crokus have been largely passed by silicone carbide, aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide abrasives.  These don't break down near as fast.  This can be good or bad depending on how they are used.  Using a couple progression of grits of the modern choices works pretty well.
